Elijah Ooko was born in Siaya Alego, Kenya, in 1968. He is a self-trained artist who started his career in the late 1980s, supported and encouraged by Gallery Watatu in Nairobi.

His earlier, very strong artworks portray animal faces with a photographic precision, set on a mono-chromic, light bluish background. The realistic, stately and statuesque depictions confront the viewer face-to-face.

Elijah Ooko lives and works as a wildlife painter in Nairobi.
