Richard Kimathi

Kenya

Richard Kimathi was born in 1971 in Nyeri District, Kenya.

He attained a Diploma in Graphics & Design from the Nairobi Creative Art Centre in 1996. The sale of three paintings to the now legendary, late Ruth Schaffner at Gallery Watatu spurred him on.

By then Kimathi had joined the dynamic young group of artists at the newly established Kuona Trust’s Studios at the Nairobi National Museum and became soon one of the young shooting stars in the Nairobi art scene.

He was the recipient of the 2001 Ruth Hunt-Wood Foundation Residency as Artist in Residence at the University of Kentucky, USA

‘Richard is always exploring, experimenting and searching for better means of expression within his work. He has grown into an artist with considerable technical ability: confident in line, composition, colour and profound in expression. His work is seldom about himself, but rather about humanity. As an artist, he remains unaffected by the superficiality evident in much of the contemporary art world’.

- Carol Lees, One Off Gallery, Nairobi

Kimathi has participated in international artists’ workshops and has widely exhibited in Kenya, USA, Germany, Austria, Italy and the Netherlands. He has featured in many international and local art publications.

Richard Kimathi lives and works as a freelance artist in Nairobi.
